Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man suspected of cultism following a prompt response to a reported crime in the Epe area of the state.
According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the suspect was identified as Raymond Sunday, a resident of Owode Camp.
The arrest took place on March 2, 2026, after police received intelligence regarding a theft in the community. The incident began around 7:30 p.m. when operatives from the Okutanla Division were alerted to an ongoing situation at Ago Lisa Camp.
Acting on credible information, the officers swiftly mobilized to the scene to intervene in a reported case of stealing involving the suspect.
Upon his arrest, a search of the suspect led to the discovery of several incriminating items which include a locally made double-barrel gun, which was reportedly loaded with pellets at the time of the seizure.
In addition to the firearm, police found a red beret cap in the suspect’s possession—an item frequently associated with specific cult groups in the region.
The discovery immediately shifted the focus of the investigation toward organized criminal activities. Further physical examinations reinforced the police’s suspicions, as officers discovered a distinctive tattoo on Sunday’s chest.
Investigators believe the mark serves as an insignia for a known cult fraternity, linking him to broader illegal networks. The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that a full-scale investigation is currently underway.
Detectives are working to uncover the suspect’s potential involvement in other criminal operations and are seeking to identify any accomplices who may still be at large.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal used the reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy for cultism and the illegal possession of firearms and emphasized that the safety of the state remains a top priority under his leadership.
He urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant in monitoring the activities of their children and highlighted the importance of instilling strong moral values to prevent youths from being recruited into unlawful and violent groups.
The suspect is expected to be charged in court as soon as the investigation is completed.
