The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has officially submitted a 75-page proposal to the Senate regarding the creation of state police. This move is a major step toward decentralizing law enforcement and improving security across Nigeria.
The document, titled “A Comprehensive Framework for the Establishment, Governance and Coordination of Federal and State Police,” was delivered to Senator Barau Jibrin. Jibrin leads the committee currently working on reviewing the Nigerian Constitution.
This framework was developed after deep professional research and consultations. It outlines exactly how state police forces would be structured, governed, and managed to ensure they work effectively alongside federal authorities.
IGP Disu noted that this report represents the official stance of the Nigeria Police Force. He believes these recommendations will help lawmakers make balanced and practical decisions to modernize the nation’s security architecture.
Senator Jibrin praised the police chief’s proactive approach, noting that it aligns with President Tinubu’s security goals. The Senate committee will now study the proposal as they prepare to update the country’s laws.
