NERC Orders DisCos to Compensate Band A Customers for Poor Power Supply

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to compensate Band A customers affected by poor power supply resulting from nationwide generation constraints.

The Commission announced that the compensation measure was approved following significant generation shortfalls recorded across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry between February and March 2026, which hindered the ability of some DisCos to meet their committed service levels to Band A customers.

According to NERC, the supply disruptions were largely caused by inadequate gas supply as well as acts of vandalism targeting critical gas and transmission infrastructure across the country. The Commission noted that these factors were beyond the direct operational control of the Distribution Companies.

To address the impact on affected consumers, NERC approved a special compensation scheme for eligible Band A customers. Under the arrangement, prepaid customers will receive token credits, while postpaid customers will be compensated through adjustments to their electricity bills.

The Commission stated that the compensation is aimed at providing relief to customers who did not receive the level of electricity service promised under the Band A classification during the affected period.

NERC further assured consumers that it will closely monitor the implementation of the compensation programme and verify compliance by all Distribution Companies to ensure that every eligible customer receives the compensation due to them.
