The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers captured in a viral social media video allegedly making unprofessional and ethnically insensitive remarks to a member of the public during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.
The Command said the officers have been taken into custody while a full investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the officers have been identified as ASP Elomore Sodayo, Inspector Adefila Adewale, Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi, and Inspector Odusola Peter.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, has directed a comprehensive investigation to establish the level of culpability of each officer involved.
Jimoh stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined and professional institution that does not tolerate misconduct, incivility, or actions capable of undermining public confidence, promoting ethnic division or bringing the Force into disrepute.
He noted that all police personnel are expected to conduct themselves professionally, uphold human dignity, and strictly comply with the Force’s Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures.
According to the Command, the investigation will be conducted in line with the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. It assured the public that any officer found to have violated the ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law and established internal procedures.
The PPRO reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professional, intelligence-driven, and community-oriented policing, emphasizing that maintaining public trust remains a top priority. He said the Command would continue to uphold discipline within its ranks while ensuring officers operate within the confines of the law.
The Police also appealed to members of the public to remain law-abiding and continue supporting security efforts by reporting incidents of police misconduct through the appropriate complaint channels. Jimoh said public cooperation remains vital in strengthening accountability and improving policing across the state.
The Ondo State Police Command urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue, assuring that the outcome would be made known and that justice would be served in line with the provisions of the law. The Command reiterated its resolve to ensure that officers who violate professional standards are held accountable while sustaining efforts to provide effective and people-friendly policing.
