The University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, has intensified efforts to promote optimal infant nutrition by taking its 2026 World Breastfeeding Week awareness campaign to Sabo Market in Ondo town.
The sensitisation exercise, which attracted traders, nursing mothers, pregnant women and other residents, was aimed at educating members of the public on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and its role in improving maternal and child health.
Healthcare professionals from the teaching hospital explained that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life provides babies with the essential nutrients required for healthy growth and development, while also protecting them against common childhood illnesses.
They urged mothers to embrace the practice as recommended by health authorities.
The team also highlighted the theme of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” noting that breastfeeding remains one of the most effective and cost-efficient interventions for ensuring the survival and well-being of infants.
Participants were further advised to continue breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary feeding after the first six months.
UNIMEDTH stated that the outreach forms part of its activities to commemorate the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting maternal and child health through sustained public education and community-based health initiatives across Ondo State
